I’ve known Annie and have been working with her when there were only a handful of ladies who knew of Hmong Women Today. It was the beginning of a vision and it’s been an amazing journey seeing how far we’ve come as an organization and how wide we’ve spread, touching lives along the way.

About myself, my first passion will always be my family. Like many young Hmong women, I got married at a very young age. I was 14. I remember as a child, my mom would lecture me daily about being a nyab qhuag (dutiful daughter in law) and though my childhood dream was to grow up and become an astronaut, the conditioning of how I was brought up led me to believe that if you’re not married by 18, you’re considered an old maid. So with that in mind, I ran away from home at 14 to married my childhood friend who I’ve known since I was 4 instead of marrying the person my parents had chosen and arranged for me. By the time I graduated from high school, I was already a mother of 3 daughters and college was out of the question. I decided to devote my time to providing for my family and joined the workforce instead. Here’s where my second passion comes in. Growing up, I’ve always been the kid who would take things apart, just to see how they work and put them back together again. I was always curious and had a love for science and technology. I spent many hours messing around with hardware and software, and dabbled in programming languages. Straight out of high school, after a series of test, I landed my first technical job as an IT Tech for IBM. Technology had always made sense to me and I was a fast learner. I was quickly promoted to IT Specialist. I established my first company at 22 and provided technology management consultations and solutions to small businesses, restaurants and hotel chains. My third passion was to help others grow through their own aspiration, so in 2001, I established the first non-profit and networking organization to help Hmong in the technology industry. The organization was built virtually online and the mission was to connect professionals with entry levels or those who were looking into the field of technology, science and engineering to help them develop a career/education plan/ladder in their desire field of interest. The functionality of the site was much like LinkeIn, in that it featured members’ professional profile, technical skills and experiences with the ability to make connections with them, to either be a mentor or be mentored. The launch of the organization was very successful. Within the first week of its launch, due to an excellent marketing plan, we had over 200 member registrations. In our first year, we were able to raise enough funds to award scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each to 5 Hmong students studying in the field of technology, science and engineering.

As a woman, especially a Hmong woman, we’ve always heard of the glass ceiling, but I’m glad that from a young child, my dad taught me a glass ceiling is only glass, therefore it is breakable. With my dad’s encouragement, I finally started college at age 23 for my B.S degree in Information System Technology and just a few years ago completed my MBA. Throughout my career, I’ve had the fortune of working on multiple exciting and first of its kind projects, including a green energy project with NASA (back to my dream of being an astronaut). I helped developed 3 start-up companies (apart from my own). One of them being an international airline, and I can tell you that being on the board and starting an airline company is one of the hardest (if not the hardest) company to start because they are capital-intensive and competition is fierce, adding on top of that, compliance and regulations…but, it was one of the most rewarding venture I’ve ever had the fortune of being a part of.

Today, I have 4 children. My 3 daughters are now age 19 and 17 (twins), and 7 years ago my husband and I welcomed our youngest and only son. We have now been married for 22 years and still growing strong. I know that many of us come from different backgrounds. Some of us either got married young, or is in a field/life that we are not entirely satisfied with. But I learned that no matter what path you may have chosen, or how far you’ve come…at any moment, you can make a decision for yourself and believe that you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to as long as that flame within you still burns (your authentic-self), you cannot ignore it. This is one of the reasons why I am passionate about Hmong Women Today. I may never understand the challenges my mother and grandmother went through as a woman of their time, but I can appreciate the things they’ve done to make me the Hmong woman I am with the opportunities and possibilities available to us today.

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going

Choo Vang

Contact Choo Vang

My name is Choo Vang and I am a health consultant. Prior to becoming an entrepreneur, I pursued my study in psychology wanting to become a psychiatrist. Growing up in a Hmong traditional family, verbal and positive praises were not very accustomed to our family. As a child, I didn’t know or have direction to make sense of the ups and down of life. I remembered feeling so lost and stuck in my own ways for so many years. I was scared to ask for help and I only saw a world full of fear and negativity! This was the reason why I thought about becoming a psychiatrist, so I could help kids, who needed a helping hand like I did.

Throughout my young adulthood, I value hard-working ethic because, like many of you, I was taught that hard work leads to life success. However, when my father became very ill, his health issues opened my eyes to re-evaluate how I really want to live my life. I began to ponder about how life will be for me if I just work my way up and settle for a job. Seeing my father put all his effort to work and never have the time to take care if his health, is very devastating. A lot of people spend their whole life working to receive a pay check and it all goes to bills. I was looking for a way where I work to have unlimited choices in life, rather than work to just pay bills. To my surprise, my praying and seeking have directed me to work with a health and nutrition company and I finally felt like helping people staying healthy is my calling.

I decided to become an entrepreneur and help people stay healthy because I believe that we get to choose and create the life we desire. With better health, people are able to feel good about themselves, have more energy to enjoy life with their love ones and less worried about medical bills. My mission is to help people create a life where they are psychically, financially, and emotionally balance. I believe that everyone deserve to have freedom and happiness.

I also have a deep desire to help the seniors and those in need. I believe that those who are strong, should protect those who are weak, and that is my strength. One of my biggest goals is to one day, have a nationwide platform to help the old and poor. I may not know exactly when and how, but by walking with god and faith, I believe that in time, I will full fill my life purpose.

My involvement with Hmong Women Today is to be able to contribute and teach other women about the importance of healthy living. Through Hmong Women Today, I hope to be able to inspire and collaborate with women who want to play a bigger game and create amazing things together.

My name is Nancy Her and I am a Realtor. I am also a wife, a daughter and a mother of two girls. My passion is to help my community with my knowledge, experience and wisdom. Like many Hmong family, I was raised by both of my parents who were not educated and raised us on welfare and other social services. I am the middle child of nine children my parents had always pushed me and my siblings to be successful so we wouldn’t have to repeat their footsteps of struggles.

At the age of six, my family moved to a housing authority neighborhood where we had a neighborhood library, computer lab and there I was introduced to 4-H Club and several recognized organization that served the community and this is where and when I believed my compassion for helping and serving my community started. (Thanks to my parents for allowing me to roam my neighborhood to find inspiration and positive influence). Through out my entire life I have been involved in some sort of community service which has shaped me to the person I am today.

I got married at nineteen and although I was raised by an amazing traditional mother I struggled between my desires and the cultural expectations (mind that I am married to the youngest son with cultural expectations). Two years into my marriage my husband and I decided on separation. After a couple years of trying to figure out our dreams and goals we agreed that we wouldn’t want to share our lives with anyone else. We then decided that struggling together was better than struggling apart and we worked very hard on mending our marriage and compromising.

After nine years of marriage, through trail of errors, turbulence and maturing I am at the happiest I’ve ever been in my marriage, family and career. Yes, it took A LOT of work and sacrifices I finally found the perfect balance in being a nyab with in laws that lives with me, a working mother and wife, a sister and aunty. It’s in being open minded and considerate of others without judgments that you will have the relationships you desire among all.

My contribution is to help create resolutions to real issues with the help of all, whether that be culturally, career, business or in life style. My dreams and goals for Hmong Women Today is to be the resource to create a quality life, living out our desires and still keep our traditional heritage alive. I want to see the change we need in our community so we all can be united as sisters. Pave a pathway for our children and future generations of hmoob women.

My favorite quote is…

True Lee is a mom, wife, sister, daughter and friend to many amazing people. From a very young age, she loves making new friends, because people inspire her! She always knew that one day, she will be helping many people and so, because of that intuition, she started pursuing her career as a doctor from the age of 10. At that age, 20 years ago, molecular biology and DNA science was on the rise; pair that with her strengths in mathematics, logics and factual reasoning; her mind was made up, goal was set, and she focused in that direction. To say she was a “nerd” would be an understatement!

She graduated from the University of Minnesota with her Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and landed a research position with the U of MN Medical School following graduation. Life was GREAT! Medical School was a stone throw away, MCAT test underway, Medical School applications and letters of recommendation all set to go…And then she met the CEO & Founder of a well-respected company. That was her turning point! All of a sudden, her desire of pursuing another degree, obtaining a “prestigious” title and job was no longer relevant.

Today, she’s one of the partners in one of the fastest growing and largest financial firms in North America. She’s dedicated to educating herself and advocating for the people in this very important and intimidating field of finance. True is where she is supposed to be today, an entrepreneur in the finance field. Even as a child, with her love for friendships/networking and extraordinary mathematic strength, logic, and factual reasoning, it was just a matter of time before she figured that one out!

Her pride and joy is her daughter, who’s a spitting image of her! She wants to live by example: LIVE, EAT, and SEE this WORLD! She sees it with clarity now, that there is more than enough wealth to go around, more than enough love to go around and more than enough success to go around. She’s determined to lead by example, because everything starts with YOU! Life is not about competition, it’s about finding yourself and when you do, others’ success becomes YOUR success! Through Hmong Women Today, she hopes to inspire YOU and more importantly, she seeks to be inspired by YOU and your story!
